In this webinar, The Future is Changing: How Global Demographics Will Shape Opportunities, demographic expert Dr. Clint Laurent, Managing Director of Global Demographics Ltd, as he dives into pressing global trends.
During their conversation, he discussed:
Implications for China and Japan
Shifts in the Asian powerhouses, most notably lower birth rates and aging populations, should have very different impacts. In Japan, long term employment and good health are among the factors expected to keep the economy thriving. In China, however, the birth crisis coupled with a slowdown of the rural-to-urban shift that’s driven so much growth makes a GDP downshift feel almost inevitable.
India poised for explosion
More push for education and an increase in women entering the workforce could mean a huge lift for the Indian economy. Much of the nation’s population still resides in rural areas, meaning there’s plenty of upside for urban growth and development if the population shifts. Those trends are harder to predict than, say, birth rates, so significant questions remain.
Areas on the brink
The young and educated in Eastern Europe continue flocking to the west. Meanwhile, a youthful tide is poised to reshape Southern Africa. If their governments can provide the organization and support they need, and the rise in education accelerates, this could be a boon. But the potential for more people struggling to find work and support their families could easily overshadow positive growth.
